Birthday gifts are overrated.
Actually, holiday gifts tend to be pretty underwhelming as well. There’s just so much pressure! Thanks to Facebook, I get a sneak peek of my friends’ upcoming birthdays and think oh, I’ll have to keep my eyes open while I’m out and about, this year I want to give the perfect gift! Of course, inevitably, I find myself at the mall a few days before the celebration sniffing candles and eyeing unusual kitchen tools. There’s a reason we’re blasted with cologne commercials right before Christmas—it’s the last hope of the gift-challenged. Even the three wise men couldn’t think up anything better than money and perfume, because what does one get an infant savior? Diapers are so last season.
So, I’m done. I’m cancelling obligation gifts for the rest of my life, and I invite you to join me. Instead, I’m bringing back the just-because gift. What is sweeter than a dear friend surprising us with a small square box—not because they hit the mall in a mad rush to get something, anything, but—“just because?”
Just because I saw this and thought of you.
Just because this necklace would go great with your blue dress.
Just because these earrings reminded me of those hoops you wore in high school.
Just because this will make you laugh and think of the margaritas we quaffed in Key West.
It doesn’t have to be expensive, it doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to BE. Don’t put off an opportunity to show someone you care—you never know how much they may need the lift. Friendship is like our Sister Circle necklace. Sometimes, you’re the big, confident circle supporting one feeling small, sometimes it’s the other way around, but you’re always blessedly interconnected and interdependent.
And of course, if you choose to build up a giftable stash of bling “just in case,” we won’t tell a soul!
